JOULUN BASAARI MERIMIESKIRKOLLA ATEENASSA
Hello there! I hope everyone is doing ok and I wish to you a very merry Christmas. Well, I hope you didn't freak out by the title of my post in the thought that it might be in Finnish. I'm not that crazy yet! The title translates into "Christmas Bazaar at the Sailors Church in Athens", which is the Scandinavian Church in Plaka. I'd been there last year too, as my friend's grandma is Swedish. I'd been part of the Celtic and Irish "community", but I had no idea that there were also Scandinavians in Greece. Furthermore I'd started to learn Finnish, because I was always in love with the language, since my mum's Finnish friend, Eija, had taught me a few words. I loved the sound of it and nowadays it's my favourite language, concerning its sound and musicality.
Last year, I met my Finnish teacher at the bazaar and this year I went there too, although she wasn't there. I went along with my two friends: from Fantasy Choir and from University respectively. The church is at the corner of a street. When you enter, you can see two rooms. In the first one there was the Swedish bazaar. I didn't buy anything from that room, as I knew what I only wanted to buy. The next room was the one with Finnish stuff. I spoke in Finnish with the sales women and I bought salmiakki (Finnish liquorice) as well as biscuits and a plum marmalade from Finland.
The stairs were leading at the second floor. We bought two lottery tickets but only my friend won a bag. Sadly I didn't win anything. Then we had some food. My friend ate a plate of reindeer. I wasn't able to do this. Eating such an animal was really cruel for me. I'm not a vegetarian, unfortunately, but I simply cannot eat some kinds of meat for ethical reasons. I had Karjalan piirakka, a dish I had already known by some familiar person of mine, who resides in Kitee, Finland. It was really tasty and I had always hoped that I could taste it.
Then we went back to the Choir, full of bags and, of course, we were late for the rehearsal. But it was worthwhile and I was really happy to speak Finnish with other people in real life and not only in the net.
Anyway that's all! I had a wondeful Christmas with my family and my keyboards at home. I wish once again a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS for all the families in the world wherever you are.
And let us not forget our annual Christmas ritual
